Hand, Foot and Mouth ... WHAT!?!?!?

So on Thursday of last week, June 26th, Ethan was acting very out of sorts. The picture above was not a bad or mis-triggered shutter issue.. this is exactly what he looked like on the couch. This is not the typical Ethan that we are used to living with. We thought maybe aliens came down and snatched him away temporarily for some experiments.

I ended up taking the day off from work so we could bring him to the doctor for a check up. He was running a low-grade fever. Speaking of "RUN"... he had a bad case of the "RUNS" too. His throat was very swollen and inflamed.

His doctor told us that there were three bugs being passed around by kids right now. She suspected one more than the other. It is called "Hand, Foot and Mouth DISEASE!!!!!" Tell me that doesn't sound like leprosy or make you think of dirty cows. I then looked up the virus and it said right in the description that people very often mistake it to mean the cow disease. It also said that Ethan will most likely break out with some blisters and within 7-10 days be in the clear.

We're still not sure that this is definitely what he has, but we did find out that he was around someone who found out a few days after seeing Ethan that he had HFMD.

Here is a picture of how Ethan is doing tonight. He just got out of the bath. His sarcasm and happy spirit has seemingly returned and his case of the RUNS have seem to RUN away for the moment.

Who Makes The....

So the other day we were talking with Ethan around the dinner table. A thunder storm had just started to brew. The conversation went like this:

Daddy: Ethan, who makes the thunder?

Ethan: God

Mommy: Ethan, who makes the rain?

Ethan: God

Daddy: Ethan, who makes the lightening?

Ethan: God

Ethan: Why does it rain?

Daddy: To feed the grass and flowers

Mommy: Ethan, who makes the grass?

Ethan: The Lawn Guys do!

This is very funny as we have our lawn cut by a landscaping service.

Speech from "Doc Sam"

2008 PMC Heavy Hitter Banquet Talk from Sam Blackman on Vimeo.

As I watched this video this morning in my living room, before heading out to work, Ethan walked into the room and looked at the screen. He said .. "Dad, it's Doc Sam.. he used to be my doctor in Boston" and then gave cuddled in to give me a hug.

"Doc Sam" has always been and will always continue to be a special person in our hearts. He cared for Ethan in his toughest days and helped us navigate through the scary and murky waters of Bone Marrow Transplant.

Um...... That's All I Can Say

So this morning I was driving to work and in the lane next to me, saw a truck with a very interesting decal jacketing the entire vehicle. It was for a service called PET BUTLER.

The truck was basically completely the pattern of someone's lawn. In various locations on the lawn (the body of the truck) were very clever captions. I always like to give credit where credit is DOO for clever marketing/advertising. This was one of the best in a while.

1. "What can we DOO for brown?"
2. "Picking up where your dog left off ... since 1988"
3. "We're #1 in the #2 business"
4. "Got Poop? We Scoop"
5. "Call the Entre-manure" (instead of entrepreneur)

On their website one of the frequently asked questions is:

HOW DO YOU DISPOSE OF THE WASTE?
Answer: We throw it on your neighbor's lawn and leave a business card!

They of course continue in the answer that they dispose of it properly, but this company seems to have a great sense of humor about the crappy business they are in. Oh well... I guess this was a free commercial for them.

Ethan Did Such A Great Job!!!

So, as we mentioned, Ethan was asked to be the ring bearer at the wedding of our friends yesterday. Here are several pictures of him in his cute little tux. He did such a great job. He walked down the aisle with no fears. He sat on the steps with his "girlfriends" through the entire ceremony. He had fun taking the pictures at the Old Stone Church. Great job buddy.

Good Lookin? You Be The Judge

So we got Ethan dressed for the big wedding day today. Here are some pictures we took at home of him getting ready and in the tux. He's been walking around all morning referring to it as a costume. So cute! He looks so grown up!

Here were some pictures from outside in the backyard.

Ahhh ... Spring .. Cleaning, Growing, Etc.

Well, spring is definitely in our midst! All kinds of projects to tackle, flowers to plant, new grass seed to get growing, etc.

First up on the project list was cutting down a huge shrub that was poorly cared for since we've moved in. While away on business, Carolyn had her dad come over and use his chainsaw (not the one pictured here).

Today, Ethan and I started digging around the stump to see if we could get it to loosen up at all. Um.. NOT! This thing has been here forever apparently. The root system is ridiculously think and must go for miles or something. Ethan felt that "Thomas" boots were a good substitute for steel toed work boots. Surprisingly, he actually helped me move quite a bit of dirt. Teach them early I guess... huh? After removing some of the dirt around this stump, it looks like we may need to use alternate methods to remove it. We had someone offer to tie a chain around it and try to yank it with their truck.

We've also been doing some spot grass seeding around the yard. This picture is just after 1 week of seeding. One of the issues is with rain it seems as though the seed pools up in spots where the soil angles downward.

We did some up the edge of our driveway and it came in pretty decent. We also put some along our walkway and that seemed to have come in fairly well also.

Carolyn has been working diligently on the garden. We have two areas in our yard that she tends to. One of the gifts her mom gives her for Mother's Day is to come over with some new flowers and plant them in our garden for us. Very nice! Ethan has also been helping her off and on in the garden too. We have some bleeding hearts coming in quite nicely. Not sure what the purple thing is.

We also have a rose bush and some weird climbing plant that I can never remember what it's called. It is to the left of the rose bush with the trellis thing on it. Can't you tell I'm good at gardening. I don't even know basic terminology.

Then the awning... ah yes.. the beloved awning. Quite a bit of our roof line is outfitted with aluminum siding material. Well the awning we HAD on our front porch, definitely did not make it through this past winter season. All of those thaws and quick freezes... the awning didn't WEATHER too well.. ha ha ha!!! Get it! Weather? So, I removed it today.

Last but not least, the lilac tree. It is starting to bloom. We dug up most of the grassy weeds around the base and put down some fresh mulch.

PMC Pedal Partner Party 2008

The three of us took a ride in to Boston this morning around 10AM. Today was our second year attending the PMC Pedal Partner Party. This is a party where you meet up with the team or individual that will be riding in honor of a patient of the Jimmy Fund Clinic. Last year Erin Downey rode for Ethan. This year a group from a company called Tighe & Bond will be riding for him. Here is a video recap of our day.

3 Alarm Fire - Yikes!

So some people may say that this is just an amazing photo of an apartment building engulfed in flames. However, when I saw this photo on TV this morning I made a loud GULP sound. The area where this fire took place is located directly across the street from the apartment I lived in for 9 years of my life. I even know people personally who live in the first floor of the building pictured here.

Here is a google street view image of my old street. The gray apartment building pictures on the right is where I used to live on the second floor. The apartment across the street on the left of this image is of the two that went up in flames this morning.

This picture is a Google Street View from the other end of the street, my apartment on the left. The two apartment that went up in flames are on the right hand side.

NEWS STORY ARTICLE
A three-alarm fire at Hudson and Townsend streets early this morning l
eft several residents without a home.

The fire – reported about 5:45 a.m. – moved fast, starting in a tenement at 11 Hudson St. and then extending to a
n adjacent apartment house at 75 Townsend St.

There were a few anxious moments. When members of Engine 4 arrived at the scene they were told two people were inside the third floor apartment on 11 Hudson St.

The firefighters got out a husband and wife moments before the roof collapsed in the bedroom area. Neither was hurt, nor were any other residents of the two buildings.

Fire officials believe the fire started in the Hudson Street building before flames jump to the other building. Both three-deckers have six apartments.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Fire officials said a resident in the Townsend Street apartment building yelled to his Hudson Street neighbors that their building was on fire. Minutes later, the man's own building was in flames.

Commissions ... Commissions ... Commissions

Ok, so recently Carolyn and I have been doing a financial course on better management of your money, etc. One of the things suggested in the course that we decided to try was "commission based" allowance. Basically, it's getting money for completing certain job/chores around the house.
Ethan has certain things that he helps with around the house. These include things like loading/unloading the dishwasher with Mommy, cleaning the living room before bed, making his bed, etc. He has the understand and expectation that upon completion of those tasks, he will receive a commission for the work he did. We have been teaching him that he can "save up" his commissions for things that he might want, that aren't entirely necessary to have.

So I roll up the drive way this evening and he runs over to the car and says joyfully... "Dad, we have to go in the house and count my commissions and then go to the store and buy some gloves so I can help Mommy in the garden." So, we did just that... we had told him that the first time he wanted to spend his commissions, we would make a big deal out of it. So, we hopped into the car and drove down to Walmart. We all went in with one purpose... find Ethan some gardening gloves.. much to my dismay, the only pair that they had in his size were pink Dora the Explorer gloves. Ethan being the kid that he is, said he wanted Dora. I found myself looking around for basketballs, baseballs, footballs ... or pretty much anything not PINK! Oh well, it made him happy, so we went to the check out line. I picked Ethan up and the lady told him how much his gloves cost ($2.54). He counted out 3 dollar bills and handed them to her. She then handed him some change and a receipt. He took his bag and placed it in an empty carriage and claimed the carriage as his own. We came home and he put his gloves on and he and Mommy pulled weeds out of the garden.

Ethan - JFC - 4/23/2008

Ethan had his bone marrow testing done today. We arrived at the Jimmy Fund Clinic a little after 8AM. The ride in to the hospital was totally smooth. When we go into the hospital, the corridors were completely silent and empty. I made the comment to Carolyn "what did someone invent a magic pill for cancer?" Wouldn't that be nice!

We then got into the clinic and it too was empty except for a few patients. There was a group of ladies there that came in to work with the kids to make pillow cases, etc with sewing machines and fabric. Ethan made the pillow case that you see in this photo. It has a bunch of cars and trucks on it... there's a big surprise.

It finally came time for Ethan to get his IV. He has a few blown veins so they had to stick him multiple times. It was pretty torturous for the two of us. When he woke up he devoured a chicken nugget happy meal. We wait until tomorrow to get preliminary results back and then the more detailed results come back in a week or so. Ethan is doing just fine. This photo posted today is of Ethan after he collapsed in my arms following his IV sticking crisis.

Gas Prices!!!

So of course we all know that gas prices are nuts! I remember when Carolyn and I first met that you'd see $0.99 on the signs rather than $3.47, like they are as of today at many local stations.

One thing I didn't realize for some reason is that Price Chopper Supermarket have this "save on gas" program, that each time I'ved used my card, I apparently earned credits towards. I wasn't until a few days ago that I ordered reprint of my card as I had lost it. Well, we went shopping the other night and spent over $50 and apparently the program works such, that when you do this, you earn 10 cents off each gallon of gas, up to 20 gallons. Well, when I looked at my receipt, it told me I had 80 cents per gallon discount!!!!! Dude!!! That totally rocks. Apparently, I didn't realize it, but when I've given them my card # verbally at the register and they put it in, it's been counting all this time towards this program.

Now, the real question becomes... am I really saving on anything? Well, we typically shopped at a supermarket that is much lower in price than Price Chopper. However, this supermarket is about 13.5 miles from my house, whereas Price Chopper is just over 5 miles from my house. So, I'll let someone do the math and tell me if I'm actually saving anything.

Variables Are:
1. My car has a 13.5 gallon tank.
2. My car currently gets about 23.5 miles per gallon on average.
3. Store #1 (old store) is 13.5 miles from my house, one way.
4. Store #2 (Price Chopper) is 5.2 miles one way.
5. I need to spend $50 for 10 cents off, so for 80 cents, that means I spent $400 over time.
6. My average fill up schedule is 2 times per week at about $42 per fillup.

So today, I paid $2.61 per gallon!!!

Ethan Sings Bedtime Songs

Ok, so this was perhaps the greatest feeling as a Dad. Ethan and I sat down at the piano. He started out by asking me to move over and "make room for me". So I scotted over a little on the bench. He then sat next to me and started playing. I thought it'd be a good idea to have him sing some bedtime songs, since it was bedtime. Here is the footage of it.

Amazing that he already has pretty decent pitch. Also, on the second try of "You Are My Sunshine" listen to how his run of the keys is actually in tune with what I'm playing... granted I'm in the Key of C.

Brian's Potato Mash Bash

So this evening for dinner, I knew I wanted to make something with potatoes, however I didn't know quite what I was looking for. I always love when I'm cooking and have no idea what I want and just start messing around and mixing stuff together. Carolyn voted that this spontaneous recipe worked out well for her taste.

Brian's Potato Mash Bash for Two
(4) Medium Sized Red Russet Potatoes
(3-4) Slices of Cheddar Cheese (can also use a brick and grate it)
(2 Tbsp) Chopped Chives
(1/2 stick) butter
(1 Tbsp) Minced Garlic
(1/2) Large Purple Onion
Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper

Roughly cube the potatoes with a knife. I prefer small triangular chunks. Place potatoes in a pan of water and bring water to a boil. After the potatoes start to boil, check often (every 5 minutes) until just before they are soft enough to slip off a fork. Leave the skins on. While the potatoes are boiling, take the 1/2 stick of butter and place in a small mixing bowl and dump in chopped chives and minced garlic. Set this bowl aside to allow the butter to soften. Take the purple onion and break apart individual slices from the 1/2 you cut. Mix the onion slices in a different small bowl with enough olive oil to coat. Season the onions with salt and pepper. You may either sautee the onions in a pan or throw them on the 'ole grill. This is what I did. Removed from the grill once they soften and have some color. Take all onions and dice them. Remove the potatoes from the water with a strainer. Put the potatoes back in the pan and throw in the diced onion bits. Mix the butter, chives and minced garlic in it's bowl. If unable to mix easily, soften in the microwave. Once mixed, pour into the pan with the potatoes and the onions. Take 3 slices of cheddar cheese and cut into small strips. Then cut the strips into small little bits of cheese. Sprinkle the small bits of cheese in to the potato mix. Give it all a rough stir with a fork, lightly mashing as you go. Serve with some fresh chives. You might also like to throw in some bacon that you've already crisped. If using a brick of cheese, grate enough to allow cheese to mix in well with everything else and melt throughout.

Some may like it, some may not... all that counts is that my wife did!!

Feeling Better...

So Ethan is feeling a little better. He still has a very nagging cough. What an interesting day weather-wise today. It started out very rainy and then turned sunny and mid-to-high 60's at least. Then it rained again and then the sun came back out and then it rained while the sun was out. Well, here was the result of all of that.

SICK AGAIN!!!

Hello everybody! Ethan is sick again with another cold. Many of you know that he had a cold a little over a week ago, that lasted a few weeks. Well, he had about 1 week off of good health and he just came down with another cold recently.

Please say a prayer for him. Please also say a prayer for us. Knowing his medical history, Carolyn and I get very worried each and every time he gets sick, more so than most parents would.

Thanks...

H2 WHAT!?!?!?!

So, with Ethan turning 4 this year, we decided to get him a real nice present. Do you think he likes it from this picture? Video to follow soon!

Happy 4th Birthday!!!

Wow! Four years old already! That's right... it is very hard to believe but Ethan turned 4 years old TODAY!

I still remember that first day of April 2004. I was at work, about an hour away from home. At the time we had quite an intense website. I recall typing up the big update for April Fools Day 2004.

ETHAN BRIAN ROSSI
BORN 4/1/04 at #:##AM

Little did I know that my attempt to fool all of our friends and family would be somewhat of a prediction!

Sure enough, almost 12 hours after the time I posted on our site, as a joke, I was in the labor and delivery room with Carolyn and things were well under way to deliver Ethan. Wow! I can remember details of his birth like it happened yesterday.

These days, the "first cries" out of the womb have been replaced with whining about not being able to watch 4 movies in a row on the DVD player. The sweet tones of "momma and dadda" have been replaced with sarcastic comments using our names, usually about cramming food into our mouths. The screaming to be held has turned into the hand going up in the form of a stop sign followed by the comments "Dad stay away... don't come near me". The restless nights of no sleep have turned into a 4 year old boy getting up from the dinner table and stomping his way to his room and putting of himself to bed. The stamping of his baby feet by the hospital staff on a piece of paper have turned into him coloring his entire lower body with markers!!!

I mention the things above, not in a negative light, but to prove a point. Ethan is growing up. He does the things above, which actually makes us chuckle from time to time. It has been and continues to be a blessing to be the parents of such a great kid. Ethan has had an amazing life and our lives have been made amazing by him being a part of it!

Happy Birthday Ethan! Mommy and Daddy love your very much!

Monday, March 24, 2008

UM ... BAD BOY!!!???

So I walk in the house this evening and I am told I need to see a picture. So as I enter the house, I see Ethan standing in the middle of the room completely covered in marker. I asked Carolyn what happened and apparently Ethan found some markers while she was washing dishes today. Here is the result. This was before a bath. Even after a bath he still looks like this, just slightly faded.

MONSTER JAM 2008

video

YES! Today was Ethan's big day. He went to his first ever Monster Jam. He absolutely loved it. When we first got to the arena, we stood outside in he freezing cold outside of door #4. The door opened up and we went in. As we went around a long hallway, we eventually got to the entrance of the actual arena itself... meaning ... the area where the monster trucks actually drive out of when then come out and show off all their stuff. Let me tell ya... Carolyn needs some new tires for her chair due to the texture of the dirt. Ethan loved going around though and getting his picture taken with different trucks that were there.

After we snapped photos at most of the trucks, we left and walked a little ways away to a pizza place. We sat down and grabbed a quick bite to eat. About 5 minutes after we sat down, the place overflowed with people... apparently we hit the place at the right time.

When we were done with lunch, we walked back up to the arena and found out seats. We bought Ethan his very own Grave Digger t-shirt. Grave Digger is like what Big Foot used to be when I was a kid... the big deal monster truck.

All in all, Ethan absolutely loved the day. He was jumping up and down every time Grave Digger would come out. He'd turn around and look at us with big smiles. He was pumping his fist in the air in cheer when Grave Digger would jump up in the air. He also did an amazing job keeping his ear plugs in. He didn't touch them once the entire time. Very fun day!!!

MONSTER TRUCKS!!

video

So we are planning to take him to "Monster Jam" this weekend to see monster trucks for the first time. He's been a fan of "Grave Digger" for quite some time now and we watch videos of him all the time at home. This was our prep time for the big event this weekend.

Inquiring Minds Want To Know

This evening, Ethan woke up from the sound of the wind outside. He called for Mommy. So she went in to see what was going on. During the time she was in there, she told me that Ethan asked her about the green sign that we proudly display on his bedroom door. It has been there since we came home from the hospital with him in May 2005. He has just now asked about it. From what she told me, she didn't really go into detail about what the sign meant. She did however come out into the living room, where I was and shared this with me and we both got teary eyed.

For those of you reading this blog that don't know what this sign represents, it represents a MIRACLE! This April Ethan will be four years old. When he was 6 months old he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblasic Leukemia.

After several months of vigorous chemotherapy at our local hospital, Ethan was transferred to Children's Hospital in Boston, MA. We brought him to this hospital in hopes of saving his life. It was in this hospital that he underwent a bone marrow transplant procedure. This is a very risky procedure, whose aim is to repair the damage in the marrow that causes the leukemia. Basically, using chemotherapy and full body radiation, they attempt to remove all of the unhealthy blood cells in the marrow. They then locate a donor that is as near-perfect a match as possible. They then infused Ethan with this marrow and then wait for it to take hold and start producing healthy blood cells. This sign marks the day that Ethan received his transplant. Here is a picture of what he looked like when he received his transplant in March 2005.

So as you can imagine, this is quite a bit of information for an almost 4 year old to comprehend. However, his interest in what it was for sparked some scabbed over, yet extremely raw emotions in our lives.

I decided to go down to his room, only after drying my eyes. I then asked him about his inquiry. I asked him what the green sign was for. He answered in the sweetest most innocent voice: "I got it at the hospital when they took my blood." How precious!!! I then explained to him that the sign was VERY important and when he gets a little older we will tell him more about it. He then said "I have to be old like you to talk about it, right?" To which I answered with a chuckle, "Yes buddy".

The fact of the matter though... We truly believe that our Heavenly Father has worked and continues to work an amazing miracle through the life of Ethan. His story has been such an inspiration to so many people. His current condition (apparent failed transplant, but great health) mystifies some. As I said though, in April, he will celebrate yet another happy year of life the way any other four year old should! For that, we are extremely thankful!

Nine Happy Years!!!

WOW! I can hardly believe it has been nine years since I married the greatest woman ever! February 6th! What a great date.

To make the evening special, our friend Jennifer, agreed to watch Ethan and then offered to have him spend the night at her house. I then booked a reservation with a fairly new place in the city called Tribeca. The menu looked delicious so I thought we'd give it a try. It was pretty sweet because I was able to do the entire booking online and even send Carolyn a romantic little invitation thing with a personal message.

We arrived at Tribeca around 6:45pm, which was our reservation time. When we walked in they said my name without any prompting from myself or Carolyn. They escorted us upstairs into the formal dining room area and the waitress, Danielle, came over and started out by saying "Happy Anniversary". This detail was something that I only mentioned briefly in the online reservation system. Very impressive to us!

We started out with a small toast to our 9 years together. We then ordered an appetizer of artichoke dip (Truffle and artichoke heart puree cooked in a crock with roasted garlic and cream cheese, served with fresh grilled ciabatta bread). We also got a bowl of lobster bisque, unlike any I've ever had before. For dinner Carolyn got Tortellini Pesto Cream (Pasta stuffed with ricotta and spinach then baked in pesto parmesan sauce and topped with fresh herbs). I had the 7oz New York Sirloin (Hand-cut choice steak rubbed with a blend of dry spices and topped with a shallot and red wine compound butter served with horseradish mashed and seasonal vegetable). This was one of the best pieces of steak I've had in a long time.

For dessert Carolyn had the Chocolate Mousse Parfait and I had the Apple Strudel. We each had a delicious cup of Cappucino.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable time and Danielle was a great waitress.

Ethan's School Progress Report - January 2008

Well Ethan came home today with his progress report from school. Yes, in preschool he is bringing home progress reports. Sounds like we have a pretty good kid!

Social / Emotional Skills
Ethan arrives each day with a smile, ready to start his day. He is motivated to interact and play with others. Favorite area to play include block and house areas and books. He will participate in both parallel and interactive play. He prefers to direct the play schemes. He has a winning personality and sense of humor.

Self Help / Support Skills
Ethan can find his cubby, but often needs prompts as he will quickly put his things down to go play. Attending skills can vary for Ethan. They have increased overall (especially within our everyday circle routines), but can be impacted by preference for the activity, eternal noises . activity, degree of difficulty of task or if Ethan has a thought he wants to share. He is becoming more independent with toileting / dressing.

Pre-Literacy / Pre-Math
Ethan's skills are beginning to emerge in this area. He can find his name and is beginning to identify some colors and shapes. He uses our stories and songs as strategies to identify items that he's having difficulty recalling. It is helpful to stop or slow him down to minimize impulsive answering.

Motor Skills
Ethan continues to work on tracing his name with continued improvement. He is motivated to use scissors and randomly cut paper and will color given areas with prompts to fill in areas. He is improving with his sequencing of sign language during songs and stories and enjoys music and movement. He will tolerate longer periods of tactile / sensory activities such as shaving cream (He doesn't like to be messy!!)

Language Development Skills
Ethan enjoys conversing with his peers and teachers and continues to use his language in a variety of ways. When motivated by a topic or activity, he remains on topic and on task for longer periods of time.

Additional Comments
Ethan is making gains in his focusing and attending, play and interaction with others and development concept knowledge. He has an upbeat personality and is will liked by his peers.

Ethan & The Red Sox

As patients of the Jimmy Fund Clinic in Boston, MA, we were invited to an event called New Stars for Young Stars III. It went from 10AM - 11AM. This was an event that the JFC and the Boston Red Sox put on for the kids. Basically, we arrived at 10AM and were escorted to the 3rd floor of Jillian's in Boston. We were then brought into a back room area with pool tables and stuff. We got to meet/greet and spend time with the following players. It was really nice how they did the event. The players literally just walked around and interacted with the kids in a natural setting. There were even periods when people would ask for pictures and if they were in the middle of spending some time with a kid, they'd ask the people to wait. Ethan ended up loving Wally. He used to be scared of Wally. We then went out for a very short time to the bowling alley's and Ethan rolled one ball down and got a spare on the first roll! Nice!
